How Shaq's Painting
Came to Be
Shaq’s Painting Inc. was built on a simple observation. Sherman Lionel watched tradespeople come through his aunt’s apartment — plumbers, electricians, all kinds of contractors — and none of them left the space better than they found it. They did the work and they left. The mess, the disruption, the indifference — it was the norm.
Then the painters came. When they finished, the delivery people who came to the door couldn’t believe the transformation. The same apartment looked completely different. Light felt different in the rooms. The space felt genuinely new. That moment stuck with Sherman.
What struck him wasn’t just the visual change — it was that painting could make a home feel like home again. It could change how a person felt in their own space. That realisation, combined with his hospitality background and a deep personal commitment to doing things properly, became the foundation of Shaq’s Painting Inc.

Compromise On
These are not marketing statements. They are the operational commitments that define every project we take on.
Solid Wood
Oak, maple, cherry, and walnut accept paint and primer readily. We sand with the grain, apply shellac-based primer for adhesion, and spray two finish coats. Minor gaps and cracks are caulked before priming. The most straightforward material to paint — and the most common in older Toronto homes.
Standard pricing — no surcharge
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
MDF is already smooth — no wood grain to telegraph through the paint. A light sand, bonding primer, and spray coat delivers the flattest, most factory-like finish of any cabinet material. Very common in Toronto condos and new builds. MDF is an ideal candidate for cabinet painting.

Laminate
Laminate is non-porous — regular paint slides off without a bonding primer. We use Zinsser BIN (shellac-based) or STIX acrylic bonding primer to chemically grip the slick surface. We have seen dozens of failed DIY jobs on laminate where the homeowner skipped this step. With proper primer, laminate cabinets hold paint for 10–15 years.

Thermofoil
Thermofoil is a vinyl film heat-wrapped around MDF. Very common in Toronto homes built after 2000. If it is in good condition — no bubbling or peeling — it can be painted with bonding primer and spray finish. If thermofoil is already delaminating, it must be repaired or stripped before painting. We assess and advise honestly before quoting.

Melamine
Melamine is a hard, smooth surface similar to laminate. It requires the same bonding primer approach. Once primed correctly, it takes spray paint extremely well and produces a durable, washable finish. Melamine cabinets are common in IKEA-style kitchens across Toronto condos and apartments.

We apply the same spray process and material standards to bathroom vanity cabinets. Bathroom environments require moisture-resistant primer and paint. The result is the same factory-smooth finish — and the same dramatic transformation — at a fraction of the cost of vanity replacement.
